Microtargeting, Dogwhistles, and Deliberative Democracy

Abstract ‘Dogwhistles’ and microtargeted political advertisements are objects of widespread moral concern. With a few notable exceptions in the case dogwhistles (and none microtargeting) criticism these speech act types generally focuses on problematic content —that dogwhistle is, for instance, racist, or advertisement misleading. I argue that practices additionally morally wrongful content-neutral grounds—regardless their content. My argument proceeds from deliberative conception democracy according to which only vote follows an adequate process confers democratic legitimacy its results. claim both microtargeting threaten prevent deliberation taking place, therefore anti-democratic and, additionally, impermissible. then discuss potential objections how my relates existing work.
